Lego Advent Calendars 2011

Lego Advent Calendars 2011

LEGO has long been a standard addition to any little boy’s (and some girl’s) Christmas list. So, your little one will be doubly delighted with the LEGO advent calendars that combine the fun of LEGOs with the magic of the Christmas season.  There are two hot varieties of LEGO Advent Calendars available this Christmas season: the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar and the LEGO LEGO City Advent Calendar. In this review, we’ll look at both in more detail.

LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar

LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar
The LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar is the perfect pre-season Christmas gift for your little Star Wars fan. Recommended for ages 6-14, the set includes over 200 LEGO pieces as well as lots of cute mini-figurines for combined pretend play and building fun. Let the force be with you this Christmas season!

Features

24 Gifts

The excitement and anticipation of the Christmas season will build as your little one opens 24 different gifts included in this set.

Inspires Imagination
LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar minifigures
Like all LEGO sets, the possibilities are endless with the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar. Your little one can build and play to his heart’s desire even after Christmas is over, and because the toys don’t speak for themselves as many do these days, your child’s imagination will be actively engaged duringthe whole process.  The set contains mini figures including Chewbacca, Yoda, Nute Gunray, a Clone pilot, a Battle Droid,R2Q5, Zev Senesca, and many more—plenty of fodder for a battle against the Dark side.

Downsides

Not Very Christmasy

When you purchase an Advent Calendar, you kind of expect it to reflect the spirit of the Christmas season. Not so much with this LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar. Aside from the fact that Yoda is dressed up like Santa and the set does contain a Christmas tree, there’s not a whole lot else too it as far as the holiday itself goes. Then again, if your kid absolutely loves Star Wars, then he or she will not be disappointed with this set as it is full of all things Star Wars.

What Others Are Saying

The reviews for this advent calendar have been overwhelmingly positive. Aside from a few complaints that other characters should have been included and the one concern that the box it came in wasn’t durable enough, most parents and kids alike seem to be satisfied with the toy.

The Good

  • This set, enjoy you will.
  • Worth the high cost- as are all Lego toys.
  • A good LEGO Advent Calendar for Star Wars fans…

The Bad

  • Made of very cheap flimsy cardboard and can only be used once.
  • While there is nothing really wrong with this set, I don’t think that it’s quite as spectacular as the Pirates, Castle, and Kingdoms Lego Advent Calendars released in previous years.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is if your kid likes LEGOs, Star Wars, andChristmas (what kid doesn’t?), then he or she will absolutely adore this Star Wars Advent Calendar made by LEGO.

LEGO City Advent Calendar

LEGO City Advent Calendar
The LEGO LEGO City Advent Calendar is the classic advent calendar for LEGO fans. Unlike the Star Wars variety, this set is about all things LEGO and throws in some nice Christmas figurines as well. This is the perfect gift for a hardcore LEGO fan.

Features

24 Mini Figures

Like the Star Wars Edition, the LEGO City Advent Calendar also features 24 mini figures to put together as “gifts” leading up to the holiday season. They all come together at the end to build an entire LEGO city. This feature allows for the fun to continue even after the season has come to an end.

Builds Anticipation
LEGO LEGO® City Advent Calendar 7553
With a gift for each of the 24 days preceding Christmas, this set promises to build excitement and anticipation about the upcoming holiday, especially for a kid who loves LEGOs. You could even say that the set encourages the virtue of patience and reminds kids to be on their best behavior so that they can stay on Santa’s “nice” list!

Satisfyingly Easy

Unlike some of the more complex LEGO sets out there, the 24 different mini sets in the LEGO City Advent Calendar are relatively easy to put together. Despite the manufacturer’s age recommendation for this toy, some parents have even reported that their toddlers can put the pieces together with a little help from a grown-up or older sibling. Gotta love frustration-free building kits!

Downsides

Too Christmasy

This may very well be a matter of personal preference but whereas some complained that the LEGO Star Wars Advent Calendar didn’t include enough holiday touches, this one seems to overdo it a bit. As a parent who wants to see my kids get the most out of the toys I buy them, I would want them to be able to enjoy the toy throughout the year, not just as Christmas time. This would be much more likely to actually occur if there were less openly Christmas-oriented figurines in the set.

What Others Are Saying

The Good

  • Fun for the kids during Christmas break
  • Perfect for the LEGO maniac
  • My kids especially love the clever modeling using just a few bricks.
  • Overall, a good set and highly recommended.

The Bad

We were hard-pressed to find many negative comments about the set, but here are a couple we came across…

  • The cardboard is not very rugged; it’s pretty standard Lego box issue.
  • The odd part is a Police station for Christmas?

The Bottom Line

Despite the very minimal complaints about this set, there’s no doubt that any LEGO fan will love it. When you take Christmas and add LEGOs to the equation, you really can’t go wrong. Your kids will love receiving a pre-Christmas gift every day for the 24 days leading to Christmas, and chances are, you’ll enjoy doling them out as well. It may just be the Christmas addition that gets the whole family in the spirit of the season. And since LEGO puts these Advent Calendars out every year, it can become a fun family tradition your kids will remember fondly for many years to come.
